With Oracle VM VirtualBox, you can install any version of an operating system, such as Linux, Solaris, and other versions of Windows (as long as you have the original installation files, of course) and run them within your current version of Windows. The first thing you notice about Oracle VM VirtualBox is that it's extremely easy to setup and use. Oracle VM VirtualBox holds your hand through the whole process so you never feel out of your depth.

Integration with your native environment is extremely impressive. Oracle VM VirtualBox allows for declaring certain host directories as 'shared folders', which can then be accessed from within the operating system you're running in Oracle VM VirtualBox. In addition, connecting USB devices is simple - VirtualBox automatically detects new devices and asks you if you wish to use them. Unfortunately, there is no drag-and-drop function from your native desktop into VirtualBox but considering it's free, you really can't complain.

If you don't want to pay for commercial solutions and require a virtual OS for generally minor usage, Oracle VM VirtualBox is more than enough.

There's not much to say about the antivirus module included in avast! Internet Security. It's just the same engine as the original avast! Internet Security also includes the so called Behavior shield, a special monitor that warns you if it detects any suspicious behavior on your computer.

The firewall module included in avast! Internet Security detects network connections automatically, and lets you assign different security protocols to them according to their potential risk. You can define rules to allow or block programs and also create a list with "friend" networks.

As for the spam filter, avast! Internet Security helps you create "white" and "black" lists for allowed and blocked addresses, mark spam messages with certain wording in the subject and send them automatically to a specific folder. The program also includes a web filter to block certain sites – perfect to restrict the websites your kids can visit, for example.

It may not be the most complete security suite ever, but avast! Internet Security does an excellent job protecting your system from viruses, unauthorized access and spam.

Windows Live Messenger 2009 Free download

Windows Live Messenger, previously known as MSN Messenger, was renamed as part of Microsoft's move away from Hotmail, towards the Live online community. Now the most popular IM app in the world has finally reached version 9. 

The most striking feature in the new Windows Live Messenger 9 is an all-new interface with a colorful design, far from the traditional Windows application structure. You can customize it by choosing your own theme and color scheme.

In order to maintain the neatness of this design, the menu bar in Windows Live Messenger has been hidden under a few buttons on the top-right corner – though you can temporarily make the standard menu bar visible by pressing the Alt key. While I understand the reason why they did this, it makes menu options a bit uncomfortable to browse.

Windows Live Messenger offers plenty of emoticons and winks to cheer up your conversations. You can expand both collections easily by adding new sets which you'll find by the hundred on the Internet. Customization possibilities include changing the chat window background or even adding a personal message to your nickname, but not creating custom status messages. Also, Windows Live Messenger status messages have now been reduced to "online", "away" or "busy" – so no more "on the phone" or "out to lunch", for example.

Chat conversations are not the only thing you can do with Windows Live Messenger. There is also the possibility of having video chats using your webcam, and also make VoIP calls. Another great feature in Windows Live Messenger is the possibility to view and share pictures within the chat window, without having to send files over to your contact.

Regarding contact lists, the new Windows Live Messenger lets you create specific groups of users, different from the ones previously known as "groups" and which have now been renamed to Categories. These groups allow you to have multiple simultaneous chats with several contacts. Another new feature in the contact management system in Windows Live Messenger is Favorites, a special category that enables you to have the people you talk to most always to hand.

Windows Live Messenger 9 includes many interesting new features, all conveniently built into a nice interface. I'm not sure that this handful of new functions is the reason why the program weighs in at almost 70 MB.

Windows Live Messenger reaches version 9 with a renewed interface, loads of new features and a bit of extra weight.

Nexus Radio is a desktop application that streams thousands of radio stations right to your desktop, meaning you don't have to go hunting on the Internet.

The slick interface is packed full of features and options, while the stations themselves are easy to negotiate. Nexus Radio's selection of broadcasters is arranged by musical style, station name, bitrate and format. Although I have to admit that I had never heard of lots of the stations on offer, there is a great variety in all genres and I had no problem finding plenty of music that I was happy to listen to.

When you get bored of listening to streamed radio, Nexus Radio also lets you search for individual artists and songs, playing the result immediately or saving it for later. You can mark songs and artists as favorites, for easy access later, tag them, and even directly record audio to your computer. If all that that wasn't enough, the program comes with some cool visualizations, as well as integration with Facebook and Nexus Radio's own social network.

Despite the great selection of radio stations and extensive options, Nexus Radio has a few issues that make listening slightly less comfortable than it could be. Adding favorites is not very intuitive, something that complicates the playing of results found via the search. In addition to this, many of the additional features must be managed via the Nexus Radio webpage, which doesn't make the experience entirely self-contained. Nonetheless, Nexus Radio is a great little streaming application, and if a few fiddly problems don't bother you, you're sure to be grooving away almost as soon as you download.

Nexus Radio's great selection of stations means there's sure to be something for everyone.
